BOB MOORE's Truck Buying Guide
What you’ll carry determines what body style is right for your new truck. Do you haul perishable or frozen items? A refrigerated van body would be best. Are you delivering goods in boxes, furniture, hardware, parts, consumer electronics, etc.? A dry freight body is appropriate. How about agricultural or construction products, plumbing supplies or large, heavy objects? A stake body or flatbed with fold-down sides or ramp would make sense. The same goes for landscapers or lawn service companies hauling plants or equipment. Electricians, plumbers, carpenters or craftsmen would find a utility body a likely choice.
Bottom line, no matter which body you choose, the Canter is engineered with the body-builder-friendliest frame in the business, ensuring quick, secure mounting. Your local Mitsubishi Fuso dealer is very knowledgeable about truck bodies and has established relationships with body builders to help you select the right one for your needs. Or help transfer your current truck body to a new vehicle.
The Canter models come in four GVWRs.

GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) is the total weight of a truck and everything on and in it, including driver and passenger. Exceed it, and you could be ticketed by local law enforcement. Better to under-load a higher GVWR truck than to over-load a lower-rated one. So think about the loads you typically carry, and spec accordingly.
GVWR is not to be confused with “curb weight”, which is simply the weight of an empty, unmanned truck. However, the lighter the curb weight the better, because it can produce a payload advantage. The Mitsubishi Fuso Canter has lower curb weight than competitive trucks with similar GVWRs, which could give you a payload edge of up to 2,200 pounds. Advantage: you!
Some medium-duty truck manufacturers offer gasoline engines, but in the long run diesel engines tend to be the better choice. For starters, a diesel delivers more torque at lower rpm, which makes it easier to start a vehicle from a standstill. Diesel engines are designed to last longer, too. While gas engines can require a rebuild in as little as 100,000 miles, 300,000+ miles from a diesel engine is not unusual with proper maintenance. And their service intervals are often longer than gas engines. The Canter goes 18,000 miles between oil changes!
And should you think diesel engines don’t run as cleanly as gasoline engines, Mitsubishi Fuso diesels feature world-proven BlueTec® emission treatment systems for payload-moving power that’s lean and clean. Best of all, diesels deliver better fuel economy than gasoline engines. Gallon for gallon, diesel contains more energy (147,000 BTUs) than gasoline (125,000 BTUs). You’ll burn more gasoline to equal the power output of diesel fuel. And Mitsubishi Fuso’s new, lighter, higher-revving diesel engine delivers better fuel economy than our previous power plants!
Conventional trucks place the engine and hood in front of the driver, which adds to the vehicle’s overall length and weight, reducing payload potential and making maneuverability and visibility more difficult. A typical conventional truck blocks the driver’s view of the ground up to 25 feet from the front of the truck.
Mitsubishi Fuso’s Canter cab-over-engine design eliminates the hood and features large expanses of glass around the driver for maximum visibility. The driver can see the ground just 6 feet in front of the truck. And because the cab occupies less space on the frame, the truck body can occupy more for a significant payload advantage. Cabovers are also more maneuverable in tight streets and alleys than conventional trucks. In fact, the shortest-wheelbase Canter cabover has a tighter turning radius than a MINI Cooper!
